The New York Times piece today on James Comey revealed an interesting datum that resonated with us. It appears that Mr. Comey keeps on his desk one of those calendar aphorisms that always seem to go stale after a while. It reads:
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
The moment we read this, we were immediately reminded of the Irish Jesuit thugs who ran our high school in San Francisco many decades ago. They managed to be malicious and stupid at the same time. This possibly miraculous ability to multi-process was no doubt due to their special relationship with the divinity.
So this aphorism has the ring of truth, and will never go stale, thanks to the exception. Thank you, Mr. Comey, for bringing this fabulous notion to our attention.
