The New York Times revealed today that the poor, beleaguered mayor of Baltimore made a reference to “thugs” in the midst of the recent riots.  We immediately thought that she was referring to the police in that fair city, an excusable error on our part.  It turns out that, unbeknownst to us, the term is racially charged, and the mayor had to take it back, asserting that there are no thugs in Baltimore.  None?  Anywhere?  There was a time when the only thugs we knew were the Jesuits, mostly Irish-American, who ran our high school in San Francisco.  They did not seem to mind their reputation.

We continue to weep for the Republic.
